On the 27th of September 2024, our Year 6 students embarked on a poignant and educational visit to the Jawatta Commonwealth War Graves in Colombo. This trip was not just an ordinary field outing; it was a journey into history, allowing our students to reflect on the sacrifices made during World War II and to deepen their understanding of the global impact of war.
Upon arrival, students were greeted by the serene and well-maintained grounds of the cemetery, a stark reminder of the many soldiers who lost their lives far from home. The rows of neatly aligned headstones stood as a silent testament to the bravery and sacrifices of Commonwealth soldiers, including many Sri Lankans who served during the war. The students were guided through the site by our amazing Year 6 teachers who shared stories about the individuals buried there, giving a personal touch to the historical narratives they have been studying in class.

During the visit, students engaged in thoughtful discussions about the importance of remembrance and the role of Sri Lanka in the broader context of World War II. They were particularly moved by the personal stories of young soldiers, some not much older than themselves, who had traveled across the world to fight for freedom. This experience helped bring history to life, making it more than just dates and facts in a textbook.

The visit to the Jawatta Commonwealth War Graves served as a powerful educational tool, fostering a sense of respect and empathy among our Year 6 students. It was a day of learning, reflection, and gratitude—reminding us all of the importance of peace and the cost of conflict. As they left, the students carried with them not just knowledge of history, but also a deeper appreciation for the values of sacrifice, duty, and remembrance.
