On Friday, 3rd May 2025, a spirited team of young environmentalists gathered on the beach in front of Boat Haus Café, Dehiwala, for a cause greater than themselves—Our planet. The Beach Cleanup Drive was a collaborative effort led by Griffin House, Year 5 and Year 6 students from the Junior School, and the Environment Society of the Senior School, with the support of teachers and volunteers from Pearl Protectors. This collective brought together students, educators, and committed environmental advocates, united by a shared commitment to protecting our natural world.
The event began at 7:30 am, as the beach came alive with the energy and enthusiasm of our students and volunteers. Armed with gloves, garbage bags, and a deep sense of purpose, they combed the shoreline, removing debris and sorting waste. By the end of the cleanup, the group had collected an impressive 459 kilograms of waste, including 356 kilograms of plastic—a staggering amount that highlights the ongoing issue of marine pollution.
Equally commendable was the post-cleanup process. The collected waste was handed over to registered recycling agencies to ensure it would be recycled or upcycled appropriately. This important step ensures that the impact of our efforts extends beyond the day itself, contributing to a more sustainable waste management cycle.
This initiative was not only a demonstration of environmental responsibility but also a shining example of collaboration in action. It was deeply inspiring to witness the younger students working side-by-side with their senior peers, guided by the mentorship of dedicated staff and supported by the experience of Pearl Protectors. Their shared commitment sent a powerful message: change begins with us.
As the teacher advisor to the Environment Society, I am immensely proud of everyone who participated. This beach cleanup was more than just a school event—it was a moment of learning, leadership, and community spirit. The students showed that with determination and unity, even the most daunting challenges—like plastic pollution—can be tackled, one step at a time.
Let this be just the beginning of our continued journey in environmental action. Together, we are not only cleaning beaches, but we are also shaping a better future.
