As we transitioned into Block 6, we wanted to take a moment to reflect on the incredible Egyptian Day celebration that took place two Fridays ago. This special event marked the conclusion of our Year 3 students’ fascinating journey through Block 5, allowing them to showcase all they had learned about the ancient Egyptian civilization.
The classroom was transformed as our young historians arrived in an impressive array of Egyptian attire. We had magnificent pharaohs with ornate headdresses, elegant Cleopatras with their distinctive golden headpieces, and children dressed as ordinary ancient Egyptian citizens in their simple linen-inspired tunics. The diversity and detail in their costumes truly brought the social hierarchy of ancient Egypt to life!
Throughout this action-packed day, students participated in a variety of hands-on activities that deepened their understanding of this fascinating civilization:
- The children experienced the ancient art of mummification by carefully preserving tomatoes, learning about the sacred process that Egyptians used to prepare their pharaohs for the afterlife.
- With focused concentration, they crafted personalized clay tablets and etched their names using authentic hieroglyphic symbols, connecting with one of the world’s earliest writing systems.
- The day included creating Egyptian-inspired artwork, with students designing colorful cartouches and crafting paper collars inspired by ancient Egyptian jewelry.
It was truly wonderful to witness their excitement as they applied their classroom knowledge through these immersive experiences.
As we move into our new topic exploring rivers around the world, the confidence and curiosity fostered during Egyptian Day will undoubtedly help our young geographers approach this exciting subject with the same enthusiasm.
Their study of the Nile and its importance to ancient Egyptian civilization provides the perfect foundation for understanding how rivers shape landscapes and civilizations across our planet.
