Over the past 30 years, The British School in Colombo has proudly upheld a strong tradition of staff development. Our school is truly unique in Sri Lanka, offering an educational environment that mirrors the best of the British system. We maintain high standards of teaching, promote active learning, and uphold robust approaches to health, safety, and pastoral care—standards that have been verified through independent inspections and BSO accreditation.
Our distinct approach brings unique challenges, especially in staff recruitment. The specialist skills we seek in our teachers are not typically developed through local teacher training programmes, nor widely found in other international schools. In response, we have cultivated our own rigorous approach to staff development.
In the Junior School, it is common for experienced and qualified Sri Lankan teachers to begin their journey with us as teaching assistants. While this may seem like a step backwards on paper, it is in fact a valuable opportunity to engage with global best practices and cutting-edge pedagogy, under the mentorship of experienced BSC educators. Through structured professional development and a robust recruitment process, many of these individuals are promoted to teaching roles—equipped to meet international standards with confidence.
We are proud to be growing the next generation of world-class teachers. And while it is bittersweet to see them move on, we celebrate the lasting impact they go on to make across the wider educational community.
But don’t just take our word for it—listen to our teachers share their BSC story!
